De La Soul
is a three-piece hip-hop group from Long Island, New York. Along with other groups and artists such as A Tribe Called Quest and the Jungle Brothers, they were influential in the growth of hip-hop, as well as the evolution of alternative hip-hop and jazz rap. Its members are Posdnuos (Kelvin Mercer, vocals and production), Dave (David Jolicouer, vocals and production), and Maseo (Vincent Mason, Jr., vocals and production).
Their first album, 3 Feet High and Rising was released in 1987 and was hailed as a masterpiece of the genre. It was also their most commercially successful album to date. They faced a lawsuit due to the use of unapproved samples on their first record, which delayed the release of their second album, De La Soul is Dead in 1991. Despite a lukewarm reception, it still peaked at 26 on the U.S. charts, with the single Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey) making #22 on the R&B charts.
The next two albums-Buhlonee Mindstate (1993) and Stakes is High (1996)-received positive reviews but failed to gain a strong enough audience due to the popularity of gangsta rap. They returned after a lengthy break to release the three part Art Official Intelligence: Mosiac Thump (2000) which featured the single Baby Fat and made it to the top ten. They also won a Grammy award for their collaboration with the Gorillaz on the song, Feel Good Inc. (2006).
In 2015, they hosted a successful crowdfunding campaign to finance their latest album, And the Anonymous Nobody is set for release in 2015.
