Danny Brown
Detroit rapper Danny Brown was born Daniel Dewan Sewell on March 16, 1981. His father, who was a DJ, introduced him to the music that he would later claim as an influence, such as LL Cool J and A Tribe Called Quest. His penchant for rhyming also came from his mother’s reading of Dr. Seuss books, which he enjoyed immensely. In 2010, Danny Brown joined G-unit rapper Tony Yayo to release the mixtape Hawaiian Snow. Though there was some speculation, Danny did not join the G-unit label, and instead, went about his own way to self-release a four-volume mixtape entitled Detroit State of Mind. That same year, he released his first studio album The Hybrid, through the Rappers I Know label.
His hard work paid off, as he signed with Fool’s Gold Records in 2011, under whom he released the album XXX, which was recognized as the best hip hop album of 2011 by Spin Magazine. Danny Brown was offered the opportunity to tour with Childish Gambino in 2012, which he accepted, the same year he appeared in XXL’s Top 10 Freshman list alongside French Montana and Iggy Azalea. After changing the name a few times, Danny released his third album Old in 2013, not long after he had signed with Goliath Artists, a managing company that oversees Eminem, Blink-182, and Action Bronson. Danny went on The Arsenio Hall Show to promote his new album, during which time he performed the song “Dip”.
