Mayer Hawthorne
Singer-songwriter, producer, musician and DJ Mayer Hawthorne was born Andrew Mayer Cohen on February 3, 1979 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, just outside Detroit, and he credits the area’s rich musical history with influencing his desire to become a musician.
Hawthorne moved to Los Angeles in 2006 and was signed to Stone’s Throw Records by label head Peanut Butter Wolf. His debut single “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out/When I Said Goodbye” was released on November 4, 2008 and was followed by his second single, “Maybe So, Maybe No/I Wish It Would Rain”, on April 19, 2009. Hawthorne’s debut album, A Strange Arrangement, was released on September 8, 2009. That same year, his song “When I Said Goodbye”, was featured in the Kanye West and Spike Jonze short film We Were Once a Fairytale. In 2011, Hawthorne was featured on SebastiAn’s song “Love in Motion.” On October 5th of that year, he released his second album, How Do You Do, for which he received his first Grammy nomination. In 2012, as part of Record Store Days’ Black Friday celebration, Hawthorne released the six-track live EP KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic.
In May of 2013, Mayer Hawthorne released his most recent single “Her Favorite Song”, which was followed by his third album, Where Does This Door Go, on July 16, 2013. In 2014, he joined 14KT, of the hip hop group Athletic Mic League, to form Jaded Incorporated. They released their debut album, The Big Knock, on June 17th.
