A.A. Bondy
August Arthur “A.A.” Bondy was born in New Roads, Louisiana in 1972 but grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. During his early years, he and three of his friends – Anne Marie Griffin, Les Nuby, and Daniel Johnston – started the band Verbena in 1994. The band did fairly well and released their first full length rock album Soul for Sale with Merge Records on in April of 1997. Verbena most notable hit was “Baby Got Shot” in 1999 off the album Into The Pink.
After the band broke up in 2003, Bondy moved to upstate New York and released his first solo album American Hearts in 2007 for the record label Fat Possum. The album showed a change from the grudge sound to a more classic folk sound, which focuses more on the acoustics and his vocals. Over the next four years he released two more albums, When the Devil’s Loose in 2007 and Believers in 2011.
