Cypress Hill
Originating from South Gate, California, Cypress Hill is a Latin/Hip-hop group that was formed in 1986. The idea sprang from Cuban brothers Senen Reyes, born November 20, 1965, and Ulpiano Sergio Reyes, born April 12, 1967. They adopted the stage names Sen Dog and Mellow Man Ace, respectively, and teamed up with friends Lawrence Muggerud, known as Muggs, and Louis Freese, known as B Real . Their work in the late 1980s consisted of them experimenting with Latin and hip-hops sounds and fusions, right before Mellow Man Ace left the group in 1988. Shortly after, they were signed to Ruffhouse/Columbia Records in 1991. That year, they released their debut album Cyprus Hill, followed by their very successful sophomore album Black Sunday in 1993, which hit number one on the album charts that year.
Temples of Boom was released in 1995, and did extremely well on the R&B charts. The group was able to promote their album just before it dropped at Lollapalooza. The next year, however, Sen Dog left the group, and Muggs concentrated most of his energy on his solo career. Despite these changes, the group released Skull & Bones in 2000, which featured elements of not only hip-hop, but rock as well. They would go on to release four more albums, one of which was entitled Rise Up and was released under Snoop Dogg’s label Priority Records.
