Dar Williams
Folk singer Dar Williams was born Dorothy Snowden Williams on April 19, 1967 in Mount Kisco, New York. At age nine, she began playing guitar and wrote her first song two years later. She attended Wesleyan University and majored in theater and religion. In 1990, she moved to Boston, Massachusetts to pursue a career in theater. She also began working with voice and performance coach Jeannie Deva at the same time.
She recorded her first album in 1990 entitled “I Have No History,” which was produced by Deva. Her second album, “All My Heroes are Dead,” was recorded in 1991 and was again produced by Deva. Williams started her own label, Burning Field Music, and recorded her first full-length album, “The Honesty Room,” under it. Shortly after, she signed a licensing and distribution deal with Razor and Tie Entertainment. “The Honesty Room” was re-released in 1995 under Razor and Tie, and became one of the top-selling independent folk records that year. In 1996, Williams toured with Joan Baez and released her next album, “Mortal City.” Her third album, “End of the Summer” was released in 1997 and gained her notoriety on the independent folk music scene.
She formed a group with Richard Shindell and Lucy Kaplansky called Cry Cry Cry, which was formed to pay tribute to the folk artists who influenced them. They toured from 1998-2000. Williams released six more solo albums: “The Green World” (2000), “The Beauty of the Rain” (2003), “My Better Self” (2005), “Promised Land” (2008), “Many Great Companions” (2010), and “In the Time of Gods” (2012). She also has two live albums, “Out There Live” (2001) and “Live at Bearsville Theater” (2007).
