Dido

Preferring the short version of her name, the British singer/songwriter Dido was born Florian Cloud de Bounevialle Armstrong on December 25, 1971. Growing up, her nickname was Dido, which she has since adopted as her real name. Dido learned how to play the piano, violin, and recorder in her early teens, which she later followed with guitar. After releasing a collection of her work that she titled Odds & Ends, put out by Nettwerk Management, Dido was signed to Arista Records and released her debut album No Angel in 1999. The first single made available off the album was entitled “Here with Me”, and while it did not gain attention right away, it was used in a television program Roswell, which brought it into the national arena and got Dido the recognition she would later enjoy.

Her debut album then became one of the top-selling albums in the UK as well as throughout the world, and has since sold more than 20 million copies internationally. She followed this success with the release of her second album Life for Rent in 2003, which features the very popular single “White Flag”. As of 2014, Life for Rent was the biggest selling 21st century album in the U.K. In 2008, Dido released her third album Safe Trip Home, which got her into trouble with the law seeing as the album cover unlawfully featured a photo of NASA astronaut Bruce McCandless in space. Dido was not found guilty of copyright infringement, but the album nevertheless failed to reach the level of her previous one. She would go on to release Girl Who Got Away in 2013.
