Dirty Three
Dirty Three are an instrumental rock trio with the line-up Warren Ellis (violin, bass), Mick Turner (lead guitar, bass), and Jim White (drums). Ellis studied classical violin while working in school then traveled Europe while street busking. Ellis has also been a member of the groups Paranoid, The Nursing Mothers, The Blackeyed Susans, Busload of Faith, Kim Salmon and the Surrealists, and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Ellis plays with a guitar pick attached to his violin’s bow, fastened with a rubber band. Both Turner and White also have extensive experience playing in other bands.
For such an original and unconventional band, Dirty Three has released nine studio albums to date with a couple charting in the top 50 on ARIA Albums, and have won an ARIA award in 2000 for “Best Alternative Release.” Rolling Stone magazine voted their 1996 album “Horse Stories” one of the top three albums of the year.
