Jermaine Dupri
Rapper, songwriter, and producer Jermaine Dupri Mauldin – known simply as Jermaine Dupri – was born September 23, 1972, in Asheville, North Carolina. In the 1990s, Jermaine Dupri was instrumental in getting the duo Kris Kross to national fame, especially with the release of their debut album Totally Krossed Out, which went multi-platinum. He discovered Xscape, the all-female R&B Group and signed them to his label So So Def Recordings, which he started in 2003. Jermaine Dupri would also sign rapper Da Brat, helping to release her album Funkdafied in 1994, which went platinum, and was involved in the making of Lil Kim‘s song “Not Tonight” from the 1996 album Hard Core.
1998 saw his involvement with Destiny’s Child’s debut album, as well as the release of his own album Jermaine Dupri Presents Life in 1472: The Original Soundtrack. He would later sign rapper Lil Bow Wow to his label. Jermaine Dupri worked alongside Mariah Carey, Weezer, Lil Wayne, and Usher, to name a few artists throughout his career. The track “We Belong Together” from Carey won a Grammy Award in 2006 for Best R&B Song, and was nominated as Song of the Year. In 2013, it was announced that Jermaine Dupri had become Mariah Carey’s talent manager, taking the spot of Randy Jackson.
