Jill Scott

Originally from North Philadelphia, Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, and was raised by her mother and her grandmother. Though she attended Temple University to become a teacher, she later changed routes and began to explore musical theater, which she also left. Her major thrust into the musical industry was her work with the hip-hop group The Roots, with whom she co-wrote the song “You Got Me”. Scott released her debut album Who Is Jill Scott?: Words and Sounds, Vol. 1 in 2000, an album which proved extremely successful as it went to the Top 20 Billboard albums chart and earned her three Grammy nominations. The album also went Platinum.

Jill Scott’s follow-up albums Beautifully Human in 2004 and The Real Thing in 2007 both went gold, and by 2007, the singer/songwriter had earned three Grammy awards: one for her performance of the single “Cross My Mind”, one for her collaboration on the single “God Bless the Child”, and the third for her collaboration with Lupe Fiasco on the single “Daydreaming” in 2008. In addition to a successful singing career, Jill Scott has appeared in various movies such as Why Did I Get Married Too? and Steel Magnolias.
