The Beach Boys
The iconic Beach Boys have been called “the inventors of California Rock”. The band was headed by Brian Wilson for most of the bands existence. WIlson became serious with music in high school and formed the group The Pedaltones, Kenny and the cadets and Carl and the Passions, who played at local shows. Brian wrote the song ‘Surfin’ which became a regional hit. His father managed the band and got them a contract with Capitol Records. After being signed with Capitol Records they begin producing hits ‘Surfin Safari’ ‘Surfin USA’ and ‘Surfer girl’ which Brian produced. Brian admired Phil Spector and he eventually went on to become a producer in his own right The Beach Boys went on to produce many other hits from 1963 to 1965 and in 1966 they produced Pet Sounds which was not as popular as their previous songs however, George Martin stated that the album “was an inspiration for Sargent peppers”. One of the highlights of Wilson’s career was the hit ‘Good Vibrations’ which he produced in 1966. Through the seventies and eighties the band produced several songs and albums the most notable was ‘Kokomo’ which was from the hit film Cocktail . The Beach Boys won the Lifetime Achievement Award Grammy in 2001. In 2004 Brian Wilson finished the four decade-old SMiLE Project.
